Goal Setting
“Tool Box”
You were born to win. But to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.
- Zig Ziglar
Listed below are the “tools” you will need to be successful with goal setting:
► The first item in your “toolbox” is your Attitude. Before you achieve one physical step toward your goal, you must first have these two things:
1. Conviction
2. Commitment
Conviction—You must first want to achieve your goal before you will ever actually do anything positive to accomplish it. A good example of this is adults who attempt to quit smoking. Until that person truly wants to quit, they will always return to the older, more familiar patterns of behavior.
Commitment—You must make a conscious effort to stick to your goal. The road will not always be easy, and at times you may feel discouraged, but as long as you stay focused and committed, you will prevail.
►Next is a Positive Mental Attitude. We call this your PMA. What you focus on expands. Think positive. Attempt to see the upside to every challenge. Zig Ziglar says, “Positive thinking will not help you do anything, but it will help you do everything better than negative thinking will.”
►The next item in your “toolbox” is to see your Desired Outcome/Result. We must start with the end in mind. If you are unable to visualize what your final result will be with a clear, precise picture, using all of your senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, sound) then your mind will have a difficult time achieving the result. Start at the very end, and work backward toward your start point. This will lead to the next “tool”.
